American Heritage Girls

On Monday's I go to book club. It's a different kind of book club. There are about 4 of us who get together to discuss the Diary of Saint Faustina.
The reason I go is because the other three young ladies who are either new to the faith, or who have fallen away since their CCD years and have potential to become good Catholic women if they would only go to Mass as often as they go to Thursday night Bible Study. Needless to say, these young ladies need someone who is knowledgeable in the faith and who will be able to answer their questions. I've been trying to get these ladies to return to Mass and to go to Confession.

Well, about a month ago, I was sitting in one of the comfy study rooms at my church for the book club meeting and a fellow parishioner comes in and she asks me to discern assisting with the American Heritage Girls for the upcoming year. She said that they are in serious need of some good strong Catholic women to be role-models for these young ladies (ages 12-18). I was honored that she thought of me as a strong Catholic women, and after a month on discerning, I finally told her to count me in.

For those who may not know, the American Heritage Girls is basically the Christian version of the Girl Scouts. There has been a pretty recent controversy over the Girl Scouts of America and their affiliation with Planned Parenthood. Unfortunately, that means no more Girl Scout cookies for me...and I LOVED Thin Mints! So, because of this, a local Girl Scout leader resigned her position, disbanded her troop, and started a council of American Heritage Girls at my church. Their numbers have grown tremendously and they are only in their second year!

I was a Girl Scout when I was a little girl, but I only participated for about two years because I was not fond of the other girls in the troop. Needless to say I am a little nervous about volunteering. I am not sure what to expect.

  1. I'm so glad to know about this alternative to Girl Scouts!

  2. Expect fun, service, God centered learning, patches, movies, snacks, giggles, silliness, prayer, and love. :) - I am the "outdoor coordinator" for our AHG troop. My girls have completed 1 year, and are looking forward to next year.

    God Bless
